WORKSHOP OVERVIEW

Workshop participants will discuss the full set of competencies needed for contemporary pharmacy practice identified and adopted by the International Pharmacy Federation (FIP). In small group work, participants will share their successes, challenges, and future opportunities regarding effective methods to develop and assess the attitudes and values needed for pharmacy practice. An innovative methodology will be used to facilitate personal reflection and peer discussion. The report back session will focus on action plans to maximize the take home value for participants.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Analyze the key attitudes and values required for contemporary pharmacy practice, as identified in the FIP Global Competency Framework.
  • Compare and evaluate practical teaching and assessment strategies for fostering pharmacy students’ attitudes and values, including reflective, experiential, and peer‑based approaches.
  • Identify 3 – 4 actionable steps to strengthen the development and assessment of competencies related to attitudes and values in your pharmacy curriculum.
  • Commit to implementing at least one measurable quality improvement in your education program in the next six months.

PLANNED ACTIVITIES

The workshop will be highly interactive and largely participant-led. Facilitators will provide an overview of globally adopted competencies needed for pharmacy practice with an emphasis on attitudes and values. The majority of the time will be spent in small group discussions using the principles of Flow Game methodology to support participant reflection and peer-to-peer discussion. The workshop will conclude with an extensive period for report-back and sharing of ideas and action plans to empower participants’ future teaching and assessment methods.

FACILITATORS

Mike Rouse (from Chicago, Illinois, USA) is a globally recognized leader in advancing pharmacy education and practice. Mike now has his own consulting company but most recently served as Senior Director for Global Initiatives at the American Pharmacists Association and International Consultant for the Board of Pharmacy Specialties. Prior to that, Mike served as Director, International Services, at the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education, where he led the establishment of the International Accreditation Program.

Arijana Meštrović (from Zagreb, Croatia) is an assistant professor and pharmacist with long international experience in teaching soft skills, leadership, communication and collaboration. Arijana is currently a Vice President of FIP’s Academic Pharmacy Section, ONE FIP Hub Global Lead for Competency Development, PCNE Member and WHO agent. In her everyday work in Pharma Expert, she provides educational programs in CE and CPD for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians.

WORKSHOP OVERVIEW

The aim of the workshop is to provide an overview of the 7-STEPS Person-centred medicine review process to support participants to deliver medicines reviews in practice.  The workshop will focus on the practical application of 7-STEPS medicine reviews through case studies and shared learning.  Key outcomes from the iSIMPATHY project will be shared together with factors facilitating this approach.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By the end of the workshop participants will be able to:

  • Apply a structured approach to medicine review
  • Understand the importance of ‘what matters to the patient’
  • Consider the appropriateness of patient’s medicines, incorporating shared decision making, to drive medicines safety and ensure therapeutic outcomes are achieved

PLANNED ACTIVITIES

The workshop will be interactive.  Participants will work in small groups to complete case studies using the 7-STEPS approach.  This will be followed by large group feedback and facilitated discussion to ensure shared learning.

FACILITATORS

Anita Hogg is Lead in the regional Medicines Optimisation Innovation Centre (MOIC) in Northern Ireland.  She holds an MSc in Clinical Pharmacy and has delivered and evaluated person-centred care and medicines optimisation for over 20 years.  This multi-award winning work has contributed to the transformation of clinical pharmacy services in Northern Ireland and extensive collaboration across Europe, including participation in large European projects. 

Alpana Mair is responsible for coordinating delivery of Governments work programme, advising Ministers on Quality, Prescribing, safety and effective use of medicines. She was the principal investigator and coordinator of EU funded projects iSIMPATHY and SIMPATHY. She is responsible for development of National Polypharmacy guidance, and National Quality prescribing guidelines, patient app and shared decision-making tools, including implementing patient safety programmes with Scottish Governments international partners, Malawi and Zambia. She is the Scottish Lead for the EU project to identify optimum pathway for Pharmacogenomic testing for patients living with multimorbidity, iMPROVE.  Alpana leads work for WHO on Polypharmacy and an expert adviser and consultant for WHO on patient and medication safety.


Participants will have the opportunity to visit the Institute of Pharmacy and learn about its pharmacy education programmes, teaching laboratories, and approaches to educating future pharmacists.
